Every year, we blame the noble turkey and it's tryptophan for the post-Thanksgiving nap. As your resident trypto-fan I'm here to clear it's good name! Turkey contains less tryptophan than tuna, soybeans, or cheese. In reality it's the carbohydrate overload from stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, rolls, and three slices of pie (yes, I saw you) that floods your body with insulin. Studies suggest that you're probably tired because of a post-meal blood sugar crash, or because of increased blood flow to your stomach and intestines. So don't besmirch the noble turkey or the innocent amino acids! Thanksgiving isn’t about blame, it’s about gratitude…and maybe pacing yourself at the dessert table.
