As I settle back into cooler temps and eastern time I’m reflecting on the abundance of experiences I had while attending the American Epilepsy Society annual meeting. As a first time attendee my experience was especially impactful and memorable. Among some of the highlights were building community and connectedness with other Epilepsy Alliance America member organizations, attending symposium led by industry thought leaders and advocates, and experiencing the immense passion that folks in this line of work lead with every day. I even ran into some familiar faces! I feel lucky to be in this line of work and excited to bring back new and exciting ideas and initiatives to my team at Family Resource Network. A big thank you to Liza Gundell and Lisa Gallipoli for showing me the ropes and modeling such leadership and commitment to this work.

Kudos to PharmD student Amber Schinneller, who this week showcased her groundbreaking research at the American Epilepsy Society meeting! Her work in collaboration with Professor Barry Gidal and Associate Professor Amanda Margolis sheds light on the interaction between the antiseizure drug lamotrigine and anticonvulsant cannabidiol, working to improve treatments for patients with epilepsy.

This past week I had the privilege of attending the annual American Epilepsy Society conference in Los Angeles, CA on a stipend from Schmidlapp Young Women’s Scholars program. I received this generous award during my time as a SURF student at Cincinnati Children's this past summer, studying TSC2 heterogeneity and neuronal morphology in the Gross and Danzer labs. During the conference, I was able to explore the intersection between epileptology and clinical care, and had the privilege of also attending new member events and leadership workshops. I also had the honor of attending the Women in Epilepsy luncheon. At this event, we heard inspirational women scientists and clinicians in the field speak on topics like leadership, perseverance, and work-life balance. I would like to give a huge thank you to Candi L LaSarge, Ph.D. and Christina (Nina) Gross for their continued support and mentorship! It was such a treat to attend AES 2024, and I am so grateful for this opportunity! #AES2024

It was great meeting with friends and colleagues at at PAME and AES2024. It was my first speaking opportunity at American Epilepsy Society and it was lovely to get attendees interaction and thoughts about addressing the knowledge gap in Low resourced countries. I am thrilled that I was invited to be a speaker at the “Sleep Biomarkers of Sudden Death in epilepsy” panel session at American Epilepsy Society Conference in LA this year. It was an honor to share the podium with accomplished scientists Dr. Ramakrishna Maganti, Dr. Mélanie Boly, Dr. Brian Gehlbach, Dr.Nuria Lacuey MD. PhD. FAES. and Dr. Ian Wenker who have worked relentlessly to further SUDEP research. Special thanks to my mentors Dr. Kristina Simeone and Dr.Timothy Simeone for this opportunity!

A week full of experiences has come to an end! Attending the American Epilepsy Society 2024 meeting in Los Angeles, was a great opportunity for learning and getting updated in the last advances in the field of epilepsy, as well as getting ready for what is next to come. Participating in the activities of SLC6A1 Connect and Cure GABA A Variants gave me the chance to connect with great teams of families and scientists, all working with the same goal: to cure rare conditions! I was so happy to catch up with old friends and colleagues and meet new ones! This was the best way, to say goodbye to another scientific year!
