Just submitted final grades for my University of Miami Intro to VC class, marking the completion of my first semester. Didn't fully know what to expect, here are my takeaways: 1. Teaching is hard! Took WAY more prep than I had anticipated, from powerpoints to case studies to securing guest speakers. I'm assuming I can streamline this in future years, recycling some content and learnings. Newfound respect for those that do this full-time. 2. These 42 students were smarter and more ambitious than most of my schoolmates 20+ years ago at The U. 3. I couldn't have done it alone. The best feedback came from my sessions with guest speakers, including Joe Fernandez Luba Lesiva Nichole Wischoff Chester Ng Sophia Delgado. Thank you all for volunteering your time! 4. Venture is a topic not to be learned from a textbook. It needs case studies, group projects, and interactive sessions to truly understand many of the nuanced dynamics. Ultimately, I had a blast, and feel great about the future of UM and the Miami Tech ecosystem. I look forward to continuing my small efforts to continue fostering connection between the two.

Forbes Editor @stevenbertoni sat down with our CEO Alexander Isaacson to discuss the intersection of payments, computing, EVs, and how a flawed single point of failure system is holding the industry back; and how Xeal is challenging the status quo with its patented technology. "...Each one [smart #EV Charger] is independent. It can charge, pay, connect, without having to connect to a server somewhere in the middle of the country. It's its own vertically integrated system right there… that gives you reliability and precision..." - Steven Bertoni | Forbes Assistant Managing Editor https://lnkd.in/gvSrgmPC

*sniff* they grow up so fast 🥹 Big news for Alpaca VC portfolio company Postcard Cabins (formerly Getaway)! Marriott's acquisition of the Postcard Cabins brand is a huge step for the brand, which will now be listed across Marriott booking channels and pushed to 220M Bonvoy members. When we first invested, outdoor hospitality was still a niche segment. But COVID and the past several years have reminded us that people want to disconnect in nature. Glamping companies like Postcard Cabins make the outdoors accessible for everyone, whether or not you enjoy roughing it, by offering a comfortable and best-in-class hospitality experience. In fact, we believe so strongly in this experience that we hosted our summit last year at one of their outposts in the Catskills (see pics) instead of a boring hotel ballroom. Congratulations to Jon Staff, Carlos Becil, Kai Gilsey, and the entire team at Postcard Cabins!

Here’s the question: What truly makes a strong founder? I want to hear from you. What patterns have you seen? What types of previous work experience separate the founders who crush it from those who stumble? 💡 Share your insights in the comments or DM me directly. Your input will shape a deep dive into the DNA of successful founders, and I’d love to feature your perspective. Let’s spark some conversation—drop your thoughts below! 👇 CC Alpaca VC 🦙

As the United States grapples with an increasingly fragile power infrastructure, the silent crisis of grid reliability is transforming an engineering challenge into one of the most important national issues & investment opportunities of our era. Part 1 of our series on US Power Availability covers the basics: why can't we keep the lights on?

View profile for Andrew Peng, graphic

Investing in technologies shaping the built world @ Alpaca VC

It's finally out! Part 1 of Alpaca VC's study on power availability and the energy transition, which internally we've been lovingly calling "Why Can't We Keep the Lights On?" In the last two decades, electricity demand has skyrocketed. In the same time, clean energy generation has gotten a lot cheaper...so problem solved, right? Unfortunately, infrastructure. Right now, 2x the US annual generating capacity is "stuck" waiting to connect to the grid; it's more than just a supply-demand problem. Before we even begin to discuss solutions, we need to diagnose the complex electricity value chain. Part 1 of our power availability series unpacks the design problems, misaligned incentives, and new bidirectional ways of interacting with the grid that have led to the transmission bottleneck we have today. While there is hope for the future, it's going to require massive technological, infrastructure, and regulatory changes to achieve a resilient grid. Check out Part 1 in the comments below (and stay tuned for Part 2, where we'll reveal our market map and dive into investable traits).
