“[Regulators’] foundational principle is ensuring that power is provided in a safe, reliable, and affordable manner.” That’s how Angela Navarro, President, ALN Policy and Law, LLC set the tone for a panel discussion at AiDASH Evolve 2024. In the panel, state commissioners and customer advocates discussed regulatory challenges and best practices. They shared their perspectives on balancing reliability, costs, and resilience through innovative vegetation management. Summary: -State and federal regulators work with utilities as they explore technologies to enhance grid resilience in a way that benefits ratepayers. -Regulators are increasingly using data and analytics to shepherd the investments utilities are making, and then measure the return from those programs. -Collaboration between regulators and utilities fosters a proactive approach to modernizing infrastructure, meeting today’s energy demands — and preparing for tomorrow’s. Thanks to Erik M. Helland, Davante Lewis, Commissioner De'Keither Stamps, and Neil Chatterjee for their expertise and insights! Biodiversity net gain Myths and Truths. I get to hear and read a lot of rumours and statements about BNG from a range of different people. Some are interesting others quite bizarre. Over the course of this month I will try and sort what is a myth from what is true as best as I can. Day 20 – Commercial tools and technologies and environmental records are available that can significantly assist with helping to plan, design, deliver and monitor Biodiversity Net Gain requirements. This. Is. True There exists a growing range of new and emerging commercial technologies and tools that can help developers, landowners and LPAs, their staff and consultants when it comes to BNG. Such products can streamline processes, increasing efficiency and productivity, providing powerful new tools for professionals to use. In addition, there are established national datasets and maps as well as sources of species, habitat and other data, held by Local Environmental Records Centres (LERCs) that can also be of great benefit for designing and delivering BNG. Some tools are more established than others, and some technologies are still developing to meet the broad demand to automate and manage the environment efficiently. Available tools and technologies include, but are not limited to, the use of new technologies like Remote Sensing & Artificial Intelligence (AI) which can help provide indicative baseline assessments and track habitat change over time. Tools that can guide a user through a Small Sites Metric and locate a competent person to undertake necessary baseline assessments. Tools that can quickly connect buyers and sellers of biodiversity units, enabling biodiversity unit trades to be executed swiftly but accurately. Tools that can help planners and ecologists undertake initial project validation through to monitoring and reporting. There are apps that are available for condition assessments, technologies that use DNA sampling or remote sensing equipment that can help identify species presence. Alongside these new and emerging technologies and tools there are also national habitat maps and species datasets that can help inform desktop and indicative baseline assessments. A network of Local Environmental Record Centres exist which also contain a wealth of current and historic environmental data. Biodiversity net gain has helped stimulate the development of a range of new products, tools and innovation that can be used by ecologists, planners, land managers and others to help with nature conservation. #BNG #biodiversitynetgain #BNGadventcalendar

Telling the story of reliability investments and trade-offs becomes very difficult without the right data—and the right way to package it together. In a session at AiDASH Evolve 2024, led by Isabella Espinel, Product Consultant and Customer Success, AiDASH, panelists discussed the challenges they’ve faced in maintaining grid reliability and resilience, and how their partnerships with AiDASH have helped. Summary: -These utilities face risks and challenges that include acquiring restoration resources after storms, changes in vegetation growth, and changes in wet/dry seasons. -Having the right data, analyzing that data, and generating actionable insights from that data allow utilities to make meaningful changes, including telling the story of what they’re doing (or not doing) and why. -This ability to quickly transform data into actionable insights will be crucial for the future. Advancements in technology are exciting, too, but utilities need to maintain and value the core skills and expertise of people like engineers and arborists. Thanks to Carl de Haan CPEng, Ryan Moe, and Orlando McKoy, PMP, P.E. for their expertise and insights! Championing biodiversity is good for business as well as the planet. Following the UK’s new Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) rules, biodiversity regulations are increasing around the globe to safeguard our food chain and environmental health. Panelists at AiDASH Evolve 2024, led by Shashin Mishra, Vice President of EMEA, AiDASH, discussed how U.S. utilities benefit by learning from the UK and staying ahead of the curve. Summary: -By integrating biodiversity into your utility planning, you create opportunities to turn risks into rewards and strengthen your bottom line. -Thanks to the UK’s approach to measuring biodiversity — which many countries are embracing — there’s no need for utilities to start from square one to start planning and benchmark biodiversity. -Building the case for biodiversity takes time and cooperation, but you can avoid pitfalls.
