Kurrent (formerly Event Store) has announced $12 million in funding and the launch of Kurrent Enterprise Edition, rebranding from Event Store. The funding, led by Crane Venture Partners with Creandum, will help Kurrent advance its engineering and market efforts to meet demand. Krishna Visvanathan from Crane Venture Partners said Kurrent provides businesses with context-rich data events, filling a gap in the modern data stack. Kurrent expands traditional databases by adding context to data, offering new capabilities for data analytics, application development, and AI systems. The Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has announced the launch of the Massachusetts AI Hub to make Massachusetts a global leader in AI innovation. The hub will be part of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and aims to support AI research, business growth, and workforce training. A partnership with the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computer Center will provide access to high-performance computing resources. The initiative is backed by the Mass Leads Act, which includes $100 million in funding for AI development. Supporters of the initiative include leaders from universities, industry, and government, who see it as a transformative opportunity for the state. Backflip, a startup focused on AI-powered 3D modeling, announced it secured $30 million in funding. NEA and Andreessen Horowitz led the funding round, with participation from notable angel investors like Microsoft's CTO Kevin Scott and Android founder Rich Miner. Founded in 2022 by David Benhaim and Gregory Mark, who previously launched Markforged, Backflip aims to streamline 3D model creation for engineers. Google has released a new "reasoning" AI model called Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental. The model is still experimental and is available on AI Studio, Google's AI prototyping platform. It’s designed for multimodal understanding and solving complex problems in areas like programming, math, and physics. Logan Kilpatrick from AI Studio mentioned that this is the first step in Google's reasoning journey. Jeff Dean from Google DeepMind said the model is trained to use thoughts to enhance reasoning. Mindgard, a British university spinoff, protects companies from AI threats. The company addresses the risks associated with AI, such as jailbreak and prompt injection, through a new approach called Dynamic Application Security Testing for AI (DAST-AI). Mindgard's technology is rooted in Professor Peter Garraghan's research in AI security, with ongoing ties to Lancaster University providing access to additional research and intellectual property. Mindgard raised $8 million in funding, led by Boston-based .406 Ventures, to expand its team, continue product development, and extend its reach into the U.S. market. Boon raises $20.5 million to develop AI tools for fleet management. The funding aims to enhance logistics efficiency by integrating data from various applications. Deepti Yenireddy, Boon's founder, said their AI acts like an extra back-office employee. Marathon and Redpoint invested $15.5 million in Series A and an undisclosed $5 million seed. Boon's team includes former employees from major tech companies, and they are hiring more. The company has secured customers representing 35,000 drivers and 10,000 vehicles.
