In addition to capitalising on automation/scheduling tools, a nice way to adjust is to ensure seniority is rewarded with first preference; additionally high achievers, top performers and "raffle" winners can be rewarded with early preference from time to time to give all staff members an opportunity to feel fairly treated. Personally, I have always been a huge proponent of having an ongoing shift swap system that is regulated for efficiency and employee reliability.
