Share personal experiences, your lessons learned, and even failures. Authentic stories foster trust and emotional connection! Be yourself!

Put the reader into your story as early as you can. Even if you are talking about a personal experience or idea, you want the reader to see themselves in that situation straight away. That's how you keep them reading and connected to your personal brand. If they feel like 'you get them', you will become memorable in their eyes and your thought leadership status will be boosted. This is how I approach it.

The best way to get better at storytelling is by consuming stories, understanding stories, sharing stories, talking about stories, and turning experiences into new stories. I listened to a lot of NPR as an adolescent and always had my nose in a nonfiction book. My journey started there and continued by watching movies and television (and every special feature, on every DVD). None of that includes college, my work experience, or ongoing professional development, but all of it was just as valuable in learning how and why stories move us.

To align your authentic storytelling with thought leadership, focus on being genuine, understanding your audience, crafting compelling narratives, connecting emotionally, aligning with your brand and values, using data and evidence, and engaging with your audience. By doing so, you can effectively communicate your insights and establish yourself as a trusted thought leader.

Stories are everywhere. How honestly, curate and develop our stories by aligning with the mandate matters. Whether the mandate is strategic or functional, tied to the organization’s vision, or focused on ISO 9001:2025, to give an example, the approach remains the same: harness data, assets, and channels to shape narratives that influence decision-makers.

Authentic storytelling only works if you’re telling the right story to the right people. Your story might be yours, but it’s not just for you. I’ve learned that for storytelling to align effectively, you have to start with why it matters. Why does this story need to be told? Who needs to hear it? And what will they see differently when they do? For me, it’s stories about systems—where they fall short, who gets left behind, and what we can do to fix them. It’s about sharing lived experiences to build something better. The story is mine, but the outcome belongs to everyone who listens. Know your “why.” When your story serves others, it will always align.
