Annual safety audits must be conducted to ensure continuous compliance.The lab safety committee should be responsible for these initiatives and can remind staffs regarding the importance of following general safety guidelines (eg use of appropriate PPE, frequent hand washing etc) daily through WDI, flow charts, well displayed in different parts of the laboratory.The idea is to make all understand that safety is everyone's responsibility and all must be ready for the emergency beforehand.

As a safety steward, I keep my colleagues in check and give them orientation about chemical handling, nearmiss and hazards. A WhatsApp group was created for the report of nearmiss, safety issues and hazards for immediate action with the support from the Risk manager & EHS department.

To make sure all staff members understand the importance of a safe environment , starts day one of employment via orientation of what is required by the employer. * If day one addresses what to do if an armed person walks in, 1)what area is considered safe 2)who is called to send help 3) practice what you would do * if it's a chemical spill , what is the policy address if 1) contain the spill 2) put on protective clothing 3) notify the appropriate people to come help contain it These are just a few ideas As you add new staff, it's important to review all policies With tenured staff , also important for annual review of all policies
