All of our employees are provided with full PPE equipment that covers all types of exposure that they are subject to. All ventilations systems, fume hoods, fire extinguishers, etc, are routinely inspected to make sure everything is up to standard.

Take the time to ensure that your staff knows what to do and where to go if the fire alarm sounds (fire drills can be difficult to schedule, especially when there is lab work happening at all hours of the day, but need to be prioritized if safety is to be prioritized). A yearly (maximum) audit by the health and safety responsible should be conducted and any non-conformity should be dealt with as fast as possible.

There should be written SOPs and policies in place in every workspace, detailing daily to monthly maintenance actions to be carried out and every staff should be conversant and compliant with it. This will help in maintaining not only a clean and hygienic space but also a safe space always. And if there are lapses, they should be reported and handled with the utmost urgency.

After practicing the safety and health guidelines in your laboratory, the second important thing is to ensure the effectiveness of the actions. This should be covered by regular inspection; be it scheduled and non-scheduled to avoid procrastination.

On a daily basis you should instruct and advise your workers on correct handling of materials and equipment, use of PPEs and CPEs and attention to the procedures. An yearly report with non-compliant procedures and their proposed solutions should be presented to the stakeholders. The safety culture must permeate and go hand-to-hand with the regular work culture. Always have your door open for your staff so they can communicate their safety concerns.

Something else that I find very useful is frequent safety walks in the lab with an inspection checklist to confirm that all the set safety measures are in place, to the minimum the team should inspect on the below areas. -Laboratory general environment :Ventilation, clear pathways, waste disposal, exits and lighting. -Emergency equipment and labels: Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, sand buckets, eye washers etc -Personal protective equipment: Available and in good state -Electrical hazards: Flexible cords, cover plates, multiplug overloads, cover guards etc -Storage : Condition of shelves and cabinets, planning based on weight, corrosiveness, combustion etc - Chemical hoods and lab ventilation -Security : access doors, alarms, locks etc

I agree with all the steps and in addition monthly meeting for lab to update each other on safety and also training some of awareness for the months. Each team in team being tasked with responsibility to look after some of the room in the laboratory to ensure safety with housekeeping.
