Contextualizing bridges the gap between personal authenticity and professional insights. 3. Connect with your audience!

It's simple: We just need to always be ourselves: Authentic, kind and curious! If someone has a different view, let's assume positive intent and lean in to understand their perspective. Even if we disagree, it's helpful to know what others think so we can frame our talking points to anticipate these viewpoints

It's a balancing act to stay professional, give your readers something they can't find elsewhere--and do it within the constraints of your brand's voice, all while not sounding like a robot. This isn't new. It boils down to good storytelling. If you craft a interesting story with *real* language, you'll grab your reader. So: Don’t write "leverage" when you could write "use." Avoid "groundbreaking" or "best-in-class" and simply write "new." Stop using the word "synergy" when you could write "union" or "alliance." For the love of all things holy, do not use "unprecedented." Use "unique" or "unusual." Do this, show your self to your audience, and tell a good story that provides useable insight, and you've won the Internet.

As a young entrepreneur I remember being annoyed by magazine editors constantly asking me to share stories about my biggest mistakes in business. I was trying to make a name for myself and couldn't understand how revealing misteps would help potential customers or current clients feel more confident about my abilities. Now that I am––ahem––more seasoned, I understand that sharing wisdom is a far more generous act than waving the flag of intelligence. And when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable by sharing our misteps, we also reveal our humanity. Maya Angelo nailed it when she said, 'People won't remember what you said, they will remember how you made them feel'.

It’s about being relatable without oversharing and always keeping the audience’s needs in mind. Professionalism means offering content that’s thoughtful, well-crafted and adds value. Avoid buzzwords or forced trends, staying true to my voice while respecting the platform and the audience. Authenticity isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being consistent and clear in how you show up, both online and offline.

I have rules … - always be yourself and thoroughly genuine - don’t share anything you wouldn’t say directly in-person - be respectful, it’s not a platform to name and shame 😳 - ensure there is a gem in your content that would be useful to the reader - layer in your personality - occasionally share something highly personal and human
