If you need innovation in brainstorming, do an exercise prior to brainstorming that opens innovation - cognitivity is one I use. To brainstorm, follow what Osborn (the creator of brainstorming) said, give them time to think, list without judging (you can rephrase the question with synonyms), stop any judging and be certain to write down the wildest ideas, then know what to do with the final list. Criticism is not appropriate at this time. Knowing what to do with the list is important.

To foster innovation in team brainstorming, I create an environment where every idea is valued, using techniques like affirming contributions, asking openended questions to deepen exploration, and offering constructive feedback that builds on ideas. I also leverage diverse perspectives, structured methods like SCAMPER, & encourage reflection before discussions. By recognizing efforts and ensuring inclusivity, the team thrives in a safe, creative space that transforms challenges into impactful solutions.

Setting The Stage: Preparing For Productive Brainstorming Setting the stage for a productive brainstorming session requires a thoughtful approach that empowers participants and creates an environment conducive to innovation. Begin by clarifying the purpose of the session and defining the specific objectives you aim to achieve. This helps team members understand the session's context and align their thinking with the desired outcome. It's crucial to foster a sense of psychological safety, ensuring team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas without fear of criticism or judgment. Encourage an atmosphere of openness and curiosity by reminding participants that all ideas are valuable, no matter how unconventional they may seem.

To foster innovation during brainstorming, I prioritize creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels encouraged to share their ideas. I believe in assembling a diverse team in terms of experience and expertise to spark creativity. Encouraging participants to build on each other's ideas with specific questions often leads to out-of-the-box solutions. Finally, I ensure the process is structured and visually documented, making it easier to revisit and refine the creative journey.
-
When providing feedback during a team brainstorming session, I focus on ideas rather than individuals, emphasizing what works and offering constructive guidance to improve. I celebrate wild and creative ideas, using non-verbal cues like nodding and smiling to show enthusiasm, and ensure all team members have a chance to contribute. By summarizing and refining key ideas, I help the team build upon their concepts, identifying potential next steps and action items, and fostering an environment that encourages innovation, creativity, and collaboration.

Brainstorming sessions can feel like herding cats—creative, chaotic cats. The key to encouraging innovation is how you handle feedback: Praise the Bold Ideas: Even if someone suggests selling ice to penguins, acknowledge the creativity. Bold thinking sparks better ideas. Ask 'What If?': Instead of shutting down ideas, ask questions to build on them. “What if we tweak this?” keeps momentum going. Ban the Phrase 'That Won’t Work': It’s a buzzkill. Replace it with, “How could we make this work?” Innovation thrives in an environment where every idea has value—even the crazy ones. After all, Post-it Notes were an accident. How do you keep brainstorming fun and productive? Share your tips—I’m all ears (even for penguin-related pitches).

When giving feedback in brainstorming, I use the "Yes, and..." technique. I never start with criticism. Instead, I highlight the kernel of brilliance in each idea, then gently guide it toward practicality. "I love how you're thinking about solving X - have you considered how we might approach it from Y angle?" This keeps energy high, shows I'm listening, and helps the team feel safe to keep innovating without shutting down their creativity.
