As a Leader that too a thought leader, i can't wish away from criticism. Because, criticism is the mirror to review own performmance. Of course, one kust be mindful of the types and distortions of mirrors. Thosewho have seen a mirror house can appreciate this concept very well. Secondly, influencers need not be domain experts who work with motive like the exit poll experts. But, thought leaders have higher vision and their strategies are rooted at ground level. Being an innovative Ventrepreneur i had to face many criticisms. But my strategy helped me to convert many of my critics into staunch followers and supporters. Till date, as a leader i respect criticism but would accept and act on it only if it is worth my time and conviction.

There is a fine line between vision and hallucination. Listening to well articulated rational criticism is an enriching process. Never be defensive as that indicates it’s personal. If you believe in your vision then articulate it and evidence it. The debate should be about the idea and not the personalities. Avoid the bruised ego. Don’t be afraid to change and adapt. Criticism can often generate new ideas and save you from hitting the rocks later.

It really depends on the context (doesn’t it always?) but there’s an opportunity in every critique: - if the criticism centres on a failure to adapt content strategy, in light of say, a related reputational issue, then use it as a mirror - sometimes it takes an outside voice to get results when an in-house advisor can’t get cut through - if the criticism talks about the thought leadership being tone deaf, ill-informed or generally off the pace - it is a feedback gift - ask for more info to help understand what’s grating and how to improve - and if its simply a difference of opinion on the thought leadership position taken then it’s an opportunity to create a healthy debate, which generates more engagement for everyone - win-win
