ERP is not just a software rather a business process run by software. The bottom line of an organization depends on smooth and efficient functioning of ERP system. At Nestle and other places I focused greatly on testing after each patch or upgrade to the SAP system. Each upgrade or patch was considered as a new deployment with rigorous planning for testing. This mitigated the risks. Problems occurs when the patch or upgrade is not planned and rushed. Planning and preparation are the key to maintaining robust ERP system.

ERP maintenance can be made seamless if there is proper plan and execution of applying patches/updates in collaboration with the ERP provider, Business Stakeholders and IT stakeholders. There needs to be a plan of action that stems from ERP providers incoming updates/patches scheduled /unscheduled. The plan of action needs to be specific to IT and Business based on the assessment of the update. There needs to be program management ownership across both IT and Business to make sure the action plan gets executed properly. All program management KPIs should be taken care off in order to avoid issues that can detail the ERP maintenance.
