In EPC business, any level of creativity (or cost optimization) has little or no benefit if the schedule goes haywire. Also, if the cost optimization is huge by slightly over-running the schedule, it's a call worth taking. To strike a balance, the decision maker (Lead Engineer, Engineering/Project manager) has to get into the details of the problem, seek endorsement from and/or consult the right person (SMEs, vendor) along with the engineer-in-charge and escalate the matter, if need be. In EPC, taking a decision is more important than to wait for a right/perfect decision.

Actual i do not agree with finding perfect balance nor imperfect balance. There is always no perfect balance without creativity there is no practicality, and without practicality there is no creativity... everyone i believe has the own potential to deliver accordingly to there own IQ and capabilities. It is the matter of how your managing the team and leading the team to reach the perfect outcomes.

Project goals and client requirements comes first and design is to adhere to it. Creativity always will be challenged by practicality, however this is where design team needs to think out of the box to deliver creative solutions to Client needs.

Create an open environment where team members feel safe to share ideas without judgment. Pair creative thinkers with practicality-driven engineers in focused discussions or brainstorming sessions to build on each other’s strengths. Define each project objectives clearly, ensuring the entire team understands both the creative aspirations and the practical constraints. Encourage creative exploration in the early stages of design to generate innovative solutions. Simultaneously, involve practicality-focused team members to assess feasibility, ensuring concepts don’t stray too far from constraints.

In a creativity vs. practicality clash, balance comes from understanding the goal. During a project, our team once debated between a bold visual design and a simpler layout for usability. We tested both ideas, found a middle ground by keeping the bold design but simplifying the user flow, and everyone was happy. Always remember, the best designs solve real problems while standing out

Creativity needs a back up of constructibility, sustainability, economies of scale and installation cost. Practicality was creativity at one point of time until it was backed by above aspects

As per my experience creativity should go with practicality in designing. They are two things which help us to solve the problem to reach the goal.
-
While it obviously true that creativity brings new ideas it can be best practiced when teams are encouraged to bring out proposals with pros and cons and how it can meet the prevailing standards. The benefits of new concepts to be demonstrated with the practical viability and in comparison with the market needs and with sustainable growth plan

There is no perfect balance just listen to both sides. Ask questions that are directed at the team as a whole, eventually common ground will be reached from answering those questions.
-
It’s better ( if not best) to keep our eyes open and mind active & be mentally prepared for mistakes along the journey. Remember creativity goes hand in hand with discipline and skill. Quite often the simplest solution is the best solution.
