Why are there multiple outreach programmes? Why is the team overwhelmed? Exploring a few more questions may help find the answers. How were the multiple outreach programmes decided on? Did they evolve organically or were they driven by funding opportunities? Who was involved in the decision and programme design? If the answers point at a centralized and hierarchical decision making, then one may be able to understand why the team is overwhelmed. Many in the team may not be invested in the programmes emotionally. Second, emotional investment alone may not guarantee efficiency. The team members should also be able to share experiences, unburden, work out solutions and collaborations, and plan well ahead, including grooming future leaders.

As a leader it is critical to know both the strengths of the team as well as the capacity of the team, collectively and individually. Burnout often occurs due to leadership disseminating more than the team can handle in a short amount of time. It's great to have a leader who knows their team but also checks in regularly to asses workload, progress, and any issues impending completion of project. Checking in on the overall well being of the team collectively and individual team members is key. A great leader knows when to prioritize team over tasks.
