Use interactive tools like polls or breakout rooms to encourage active participation. Recognize individual contributions and relate meeting discussions to their personal or team goals to enhance relevance. Rotate responsibilities, such as leading discussions, to give everyone a sense of ownership. Finally, create space for informal interactions or light icebreakers to build rapport and foster a positive team environment.

Start meetings with icebreakers or shoutouts: This creates a positive and inclusive atmosphere, helping team members feel connected right from the start.

Ah, the virtual meeting blues—a classic. To bring my team back from their 'mute and multitask' tendencies, I’d start by making meetings more engaging and less about 'could’ve-been-an-email'. Next, I’d keep things snappy and interactive. No more monologues! Instead, we’d use breakout rooms, quick polls, or even gamified tasks to keep everyone involved. And if all else fails, a good old-fashioned 'Cameras-On Challenge' with prizes never hurts. Most importantly, I’d make sure meetings actually matter to them—aligning discussions with their goals and giving them ownership of certain parts of the agenda. Motivation thrives when people feel seen, heard, and like they’re not stuck in a never-ending Zoom loop!

I have found the following to be effective in engagement: Short trivia game like Kahoot! Icebreaker questions- Sometime I make my own but I also use The Unstuck Box Meeting Theme- Wear your favorite sport jersey for example. That one is sure to be a conversation starter!

1. Begin with brief check-ins, encourage sharing personal updates to foster connection. 2. Incorporate polls, quizzes, breakout rooms, and collaborative tools. 3. Clearly define meeting objectives, involve team members in decisions, and publicly acknowledge contributions. 4. Create and share agendas, timebox discussions, and adhere to start/end times. 5. Regularly solicit feedback through surveys and open communication. Adapt strategies based on team preferences and meeting effectiveness.

We could also ask all participants to keep cameras on. It is not about pushing people. Not at all. Cameras on make meetings more personal and pleasant. We want to see each other when we meet. It is nicer this way. This is a simple one.
