External risks are huge threats to project success. It is very important to understand the root cause of such risk crystalizing so that efforts can be channeled in the right direction. It could be as a result of an oversight during planning or changes to the project environment. So having this understanding of the nature of risk helps in identifying the best approach. To address this is by adopting the best practice i.e, identify risk, perform risk analysis, prioritize risk, develop mitigation plan/contingency plan, monitor risk and deploy mitigation or contingency plan. Where the approach differs is knowing if a mitigation plan is to be developed or a contingency plan and this depence on your risk tolerance
