In a previous team, we once held a call with members from different countries. Language wasn’t an issue since everyone spoke English, but what truly bridged the gap was the power of a simple “smile” 😊—a universal language that connects us all. Once we connected emotionally, we found comfort in accepting each other. While tools like translators help overcome communication barriers, I believe that emotions are what truly dissolve them. Building trust among global teams through video calls or similar means can make a lasting impact. A little effort toward authentic connection goes a long way!🤷🏻♀️

Language differences can indeed be challenging and may impact the performance of teams. We live in the age of technology that can be used: Translation tools like Google Translate or Microsoft Translator can come handy for real-time translation during meetings or discussions. It is important to use clear and concise language, while avoiding jargon and complex sentence structures in emails and other written communication. Encourage team members to use language learning apps to improve their language skills. Duolingo is my personal favorite. Encouraging our team members to be patient and respectful of each other's language abilities will not only help promote cultural awareness but also sensitivity to avoid misunderstandings.

The following actions can be taken in the initial days: 1) Emotional connect: Some regular meetings in the initial stage are required, to make them feel they are heard and the management understands the challenge and appreciates the efforts they are putting in. 2) Training Program: A Language Tutor can be officially hired to provide training in the office for about one hour a day. 3) Use of Technology: They can be guided to use multilingual tools that can make their work easier.
