The best way that I’ve found to really analyze phase problems from the start is to actually zoom in on your wave forms far enough for it to become a single line and actually look at the wave forms. Some will go up, some will go down, some start later, some start sooner. You want to pick a positive or negative amplitude and reverse polarity on that track. I prefer to flip polarity on negative amplitude tracks and leave alone the ones showing an initial positive amplitude. After that, you want to nudge each track to align each initial transient. Live drum recording is a great example for this, but can be applied for basically anything.

Drum tracking is a great example. You have room mics, which are farther away than your overheads, which are farther away than your close mics. You will need to zoom in to your tracks to when your waveform becomes a single line, and trim/nudge the wave forms to all start at the same time. This is an actual visual representation of phase. A popular way of lining up phase on drum tracks is to align snare drum transients on all of your tracks, since it’s a nice loud pop that’s easily found. Just be careful; if it’s not perfect then you just have the same problem as when your started. Let’s say you have a snare bottom mic. You’ll need to flip the polarity because it picks up the opposite wave amplitude as the top mic. You’ll hear it.
