During my long career I didn't have a problem in balancing my work and life. Sometimes I had to work nighttime, Saturdays or even Sundays. I knew this was a period which shouldn't last long and acted accordingly. Time management, having a pattern in your daily work will help. Based on the type of the work you are performing you can create such patterns. In one of the time management trainings, we were thought to check mails two times a day and set a routine for that. This helped me, instead of checking the mails continuously I set specific times for that, and I didn't need to check mails after work. Simple but effective. Also keep in mind work will never finish, you can continue tomorrow as well.

Balancing work and personal life can be challenging, especially when many of us have multiple roles to juggle. For me, it always comes back to setting clear boundaries and prioritizing both areas effectively. Time management is key to finding balance, so I block off periods of my day for work and do the same for personal life and interests. I try to stick to this routine while also setting boundaries with colleagues and loved ones to ensure mutual respect. I've learned that it's more than okay to say no and focus on tasks that align with my goals. Finding balance is about being intentional with your time and respecting your limits.

Setting boundaries is key, but avoid becoming too rigid. If you’re a knowledge worker and a breakthrough idea hits on a Sunday, don’t dismiss it just because it’s “outside working hours.” Time management is also an important aspect—not in the sense of chasing 100% efficiency, but in making sure every minute at work is meaningful. This may sound vague, but small optimizations in how you manage your time can add up, freeing up hours over days.

As a Senior EA trying to find this balance has definitely been a challenge, and it usually shifts depending on which executive I’m supporting at the time. If I’m supporting a global executive and there’s a time difference from where I am and where my executive is working, then their hours become my hours.. if you do this, then you can utilize the times when they are sleeping to take care of any of your personal affairs. Also, when my executives take a day off, I take a day off.. by doing this, the most important person that I need to be responsive to will not need my assistance during this time. I’m sure there are several other ways to handle worklife balance, but those are just a couple of tips. I probably have 10 more.

During my career, I face many problems of balancing in work and personal life. As I would be talked about work-life balance it’s never about adding more work into the mix, but always about adding more life. It’s about making sure that you have time to go to the gym after work, have dinner with your family, play golf with your buddies on Sundays, or for women in particular, it’s about balancing childcare with career advancement. Companies have started investing in ‘corporate athlete’ programmes, coaching employees on eating well and exercising and implementing more flexible working arrangements that allow working from home, give men an extra week of paternity leave, and allow you to take unpaid sabbaticals.

Don’t feel guilty for setting boundaries. One evening, I made sure to leave work on time and met up with friends for ice cream and a movie marathon. We laughed, relaxed, and enjoyed the simple pleasure of each other’s company. Scheduling activities like meeting friends, spending time with family, or enjoying hobbies helps me recharge. It’s a reminder that taking time for myself isn’t just about physical rest, but also about nurturing my mental and emotional well-being. You can do both! Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time helps me stay present, focused, and able to enjoy the moments that bring me joy.

I work 8-5. During that time, my employer has my attention. Before 8 is my time. After 5 is my time. I feel good about my boundaries because I give my employer their money's worth. It's easier for me to focus with clear boundaries that are observed daily. I control my 8-5 boundaries most the time, so it takes discipline to stick to those hours but the reward is worth it, so I stick to my boundaries and am happy.
