If the organization is not process driven, technical and domain competencies are depend on the resources. To answer the question a leader should focus on long term as well as short term solution. Short term focus shall be to understand under which area the team face technical challenges and strategise how to address it. Eg) documenting Lessons learnt, planning weekly knowledge sharing sessions, actions to improve the team bonding etc. Long term focus shall be creating a technical and domain specific database combined with AI and chat bot. Which help the remote engineers to interact with the chatbot and solve the technical challenges.

Something’s I found helpful as a Construction Engineer when protocols are too cumbersome to use when a crisis arises endangering production and increasing daily burn rate. I assume I am the owner and I ask what would the owner do and I do it because the buck stops with me! 1. If it’s materials, I purchase them. 2. If it’s an immediate implementation change and the designer’s aren’t available, I make the decision to limit the burn rate, keep the crew working and put in for an extra for redesign and added implementation costs to accommodate the change. 3. If it’s a local discipline skill set that is lacking and the goal is in jeopardy, I stop the current resources effort and hire an expert per diem to overcome the issue.

Regular & clear communication is important . Video calls with the team at designated time with progress are essential to understand the progress & issues if any . Written approvals of designs & other technical requirements is essential to avoid any gaps in understanding at either side.Call for picture / videos of the site or other tangible output reports to track the progress . A third party supervision / check at regular intervals is essential to ensure that results are as per the specifications given remotely .

There’s almost nothing a remote engineer lacks these days versus on site because of tooling for collaboration. Need a hand? Jump on Live Share. Need a friendly ear? Jump on a virtual call. Need some chit chat? Share a cat meme on Slack. It can be challenging in a hybrid set up where some folk are on site and that needs extra care to avoid on site bias and amplify the visibility and needs of remote workers. Unless you are working with physical hardware any difference with on site support is probably caused by a lack of investment and commitment to make remote work… work!
