Innovation skills are multi-faceted. Fundamentally, an ability to think concurrently across Opportunity, Offer and Capability is key. No matter what position you are in, if you don't innovate you are in danger of being surpassed by competitors (or even collaborators) and ultimately becoming irrelevant. Without skill, innovation is a futile process. It's risky enough without unskillful bumbling though. In addition to thinking across the piece, essential innovation skills include: - an ability to collaborate (no innovation ever occurs in a vacuum), - an ability to switch thinking between BIG picture and the details and, - an appetite and ability to handle risk and uncertainty. Without risk and uncertainty, there simply is no innovation.

Am I ready to fail and learn? Does failure make me feel less ready for challenges ahead or I use them as challenges or stepping stones to move forward? Do I listen? If I don’t empathize with the problem enough and don’t delete deep into what needs to be addressed the. I probably am not innovating in the right sense. What is the impact of what I do? Ask yourself these questions, the reflection on the answers will lead you to true assessment of your own skills.

What would your business look like if your took your innovation capability away? How big of a gap would it leave? How would the culture in the business change? If the answer to the above is "hard to tell / not sure" then you should focus on developing a more embedded innovation culture first before worrying about how to measure your skills. Easy measures could be: - Do you know about the innovation programme? - How do you share an idea? - Have you contributed to any case studies? - What knowledge have you contributed to? - Do you collaborate?

I worked with an amazing and inspiring innovation expert who had spent many years evolving the future of retail from his Innovation work. He taught me the real power of why. Sure we constantly ask 'why' in our innovation workshops to qualify points but next time you do this pause on the answer and test it and challenge it, by asking the why again , and if needed again and again.
