How can you keep your community outreach consistent and authentic?

In my experience as a Community School Coordinator, it is my habit to keep our partners in the loop. Clear and constant communication is the key. We talk about our programming, our budget, and our goals for moving forward. There needs to be a sense of trust and authenticity to the relationship. Just don't reach out when you need a partner. Genuinely contact them to check in. Send a message of encouragement. Invite partners to events and programs. Let them shine. When we let them shine, they will shine for our students, for their families, and for our school as a whole.

Keep your team diverse. Each person will come away with different perspectives and you can utilize those perspectives to grow your outreach efforts. If you only have one set of eyes and frame of reference looking at outreach, you end up with a myopic approach. These build on the weak areas in your approach and help you develop tools and new paths into the community you are going into.

I believe that the goal is to see what might be already happening in a community that is liberating and life giving. The question is, what does this community dream, how are people in this community already building a loving community to address their concerns and what are the gifts of my organization that can boost the community's capacity. What can I learn from community members to make my organization better at the act of service and partnership. Listening to the needs of the community is important, people have to speak their pain. And engaging in where there is a little bit of life and hope will yield more life and hope.

One of my favorite and most effective ways to keep community outreach consistent and authentic, is through using video. I have created workflows and systems that allow for both evergreen content to be used over and over again, as well as personalized messages that create for more trust and rapport throughout the process. This is also a great resource to showcase your brand and mission.

In my experience, if you're an outsider, it's always best to employ people "FROM" the Community, "FOR' the "Community." Sometimes, folks just have their own agenda with false humility, snaking themselves into community gardens. SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE!!

Begin by knowing who you are and what it is you have to offer. What is your end game? If it is to benefit you/your organization, go back to square one. If it is to add value to the community, move forward. Everyone has something to give and everyone has something to receive. Knowing who you are and what you have to offer, learn the real needs of a community through listening and observation. When what you have to offer from who you are and what they need collide, that's where you can add the most value.

Certainly agree. We must listen, support, and let the people be the experts. I often see the "savior complex". It is not our job to save....it is our job to use our knowledge and resources to motivate and activate true change.

All community outreach either from a non-profit or a profit organization must be consistent with the mission and vision of them. This will give credibility to the action avoiding any shadow of hidden intention behind the initiative. This will reinforce the branding of the institution showing more than transparency, engagement in an active way that goes beyond the profit or interests, creating a crossroads where transparency will be a natural consequence. Besides, by doing so, the institution or entity will engage in a series of actions that are familiar, ensuring the continuing efforts rather than only creating short-end and not related initiatives. Since the social action is in the natural environment, creativity is assured in the future.

Stay abreast of trends locally and nationally to be proactive. Actively engage with all stakeholders within the community including public officials, community leaders, and the residents themselves. Gain insight from the various perspectives to learn what's most important to them, how you can be of service in the most impactful way. Then you decide what's within your sphere and determine how to prioritize based on the direct feedback. Community outreach has to be customized to the community you're serving to appropriately address their needs.

Tools and Channels for Outreach: Social Media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Email: Newsletters, updates. Content: Blogs, podcasts, videos. Interaction: Webinars, live video, chat. Engagement: Events, forums, surveys. Choosing Channels: Research audience preferences. Align with content type. Consider engagement level. Seek feedback and experiment.

This approach is made possible by a set of resources that includes community dialogues, awareness events, meetings, and engagement across a variety of social media platforms. I think it starts by living in a community. Technology can be a great first step for research, but curating a space of inclusion goes beyond the right tweets. We have to engage the face to face interactions that only happen when we take a walk through the neighborhood, shop at the stores, worship with folks, eat in restaurants, etc... and find out who the local mayor is that knows everyone else. Just like we have influencers on social media, there are real influencers on every block. Knowing how to engage with that person will be true and deep community relationships.

Fully agree to use the tools that your community are already comfortable with - when doing initial outreach. Using AI/ automation for repetitive tasks is super tempting, but choose wisely. The human connection is important here - no more than in the beginning phases of building trust with another human being.

Meet people where they are! You may not be into fishing, but you should know that if you are looking for a type of fish that likes to hang out near rocks, downed tree branches, or in other types of cover, you should probably start near those structures if you want to catch a fish! Knowing where your audience or community hangs out and meeting them there is critical. For example, your skill set may be in creating highly engaging social media content but if your audience doesn’t use those channels, your posts aren’t helping your cause because they won’t find your audience. Get to know where your community is and go there!

An equitable and inclusive event takes into consideration where the audience is most comfortable, engaged and connected. In person events are most equitable for local reach, added to social/digital. Digital tools are ideal for regional/national reach.

Financial transparency and accountability are paramount in gaining community and donors respect and trust. Chose the best tools to reach out in a straight forward manner on where your funding is coming from. Explain why and how it is being spent and include any detail that will show that the funding you receive is well spent to serve the community.

One of the key to authenticity is consistency but there is a keyword missing here, and that word is integrity. This doesn’t mean perfection, or without error, but it does mean constantly seeking alignment between who you say you are, and who your actions show you to be. I talk about this a lot through my framework of interlocking justice, and believe it is key to making sure our movements for justice and liberation can be trusted and successful.

Develop a Stellar Content Guide If you are a one-man band or multi-national organization, you need to develop a content guide that can be shared with your team. A robust and useful content guide helps keep you on message, ensures a consistent voice across brand managers, and takes some of the guess work out of writing copy. Not sure where to start? Look into SWOT analysis (Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats) and identify how you can talk about your brand.

Yes, you should be intentional and genuine in every person that you will meet or community that you will engage with. Trust is hard to earn and it will not be given to you for free.

Consistency and transparency come right back to knowing your goals and your values. If you have clear, strong beliefs at the core of your message, then it's extremely easy to build consistency and you needn't be worried about transparency. If everyone in your team is working towards the same goal, and you're all on board with the same mission, then that comes through in all of your communications. Exaggerating, manipulating, or deviating from these core goals is what leads to issues, and can lead to distrust. Staying true to the vision, and being honest in your communication, is what builds trust with a community.

Yes, when you want to make a connection to them and you want them to be comfortable to you, to talk freely to you then you should listen carefully to their needs and to their stories. Everyone has its own stories, it can help you reflect and grow too.

People Want to Be Heard, So Listen! The best salespeople start their pitch with a question like “What are you looking for in your next purchase of X?” and the most effective community organizers use pattern interrupts while canvasing like “What change would you like to see in your community?” Be like these professionals and ask your audience questions! Hearing someone out, even if you disagree with them, makes them feel validated. Sometimes, they will offer some sort of common ground for you to connect through and other times it can just be a tool for them to vent. Either way, listen more and talk less.

I have worked as a Community Outreach Coordnator for mote than (15) years in different capacities both in California and now Las Vegas Nevada. I very much enjoyed working for the CDC Foundation during COVD19 because it allowed me to re-establish both trust and correct information in the African American communities throughout Clark County when so much misinformation was coming out. It touched my heart when All of our Community engagement efforts resulted in African American Churches re-opening their doors to the CDC Foundation so that services could be provided to the church members and the community at large. So many lives were saved because of that very important component, " TRUST" was re-establish. ♥️🙏♥️

Real engagement means starting at the beginning of the process, not when a solution is already baked. Presenting your understanding of the problem to be solved and getting reactions to your conception of the problem is really, really important. My graduate advisor always told me that in policy, a problem is both a condition AND a value statement. If your understanding of either is off, any solution you come forward with will be confusing, unhelpful, or possibly infuriating.

As someone deeply committed to authenticity, I've learned that building genuine relationships is key. No matter how much passion you have or even love your community, you can't know what the best answer to all problems affecting the community. Nobody Cares What You Believe In, Until They Know Why You Care Have you ever heard a politician tell a very specific story about a person they met and refer to that person by their first name? This is almost always the lead-in for their policy agenda stump speech. Sharing the real-world experiences that make you passionate about a cause lends credibility and helps you build rapport with your audience. Whether you are speaking to a crowd or having coffee with a client, tell them stories about why you are involved before telling them anything about your agenda.

I agree, empathy is one of the thing that you needed in this career. You should learn to open your ears to them and not just for the sake that you want to gain their trust but for the thing that you want them to be heard and to be understood. Genuinely talk to each person.

It is important to gain an understanding of the community you desire to serve. Nothing derails community engagement more than a lack of knowledge, lack of respectful curiosity and lack of a humble desire to learn more.

Return. Your community wants to know how their feedback, insights, etc. were used to affect change. Be sure that there is a planned feedback loop back to community. Don't treat this as a one-off unless this really is a one-time thing. If it is, be very transparent about that.
