When I managed a first-line operational risk team, the first thing I did was to ensure that everyone was clear on the overall mission of the team and their individual goals and responsibilities. Furthermore, I also made clear that my leadership style was to empower them and not to tell them what to do! This supported the team to know that they had the freedom to do their role in the best way they could, at the same time that I was there to support them, when and if they needed it. The more senior are the people you manage, the more important is to act as a supportive leader and not as a manager, trying to control what they do and the way they do it. I found that this type of trust and freedom naturally creates a happy and motivated team.

One useful trick to be implemented is having round tables where every single team member shares their views on company and workplace, and then receive feedback from the rest of the team on their performance and attitude. There are no ranking officer in the round table, it’s a safe space for everyone to share thoughts and receive feedback
