How can leaders align their team with company goals?

Ensuring employees see themselves in the bigger picture is critical, so repeat REPEAT company goals, values, mission, strategies, etc., at EVERY team meeting, even if only briefly. Understanding how their responsibilities drive the company mission will gain buy-in and commitment to reaching the goals. When you give assignments (or celebrate accomplishments), tie the work back to company goals, and remind your team members how important they are to the success of the overall mission. If goals change (as they often do), communicate the WHY and the WIIFM for the team. Lastly, for team meetings, assign goal-related presentations to all levels of the team so they can rehearse company goals and align their work appropriately.

The best way to bring your team along is to use the magic phrase - 'Imagine if'. Imagine if we achieved X the impact it could make on Y. Help them to imagine the impact the company goals will have on the wider community and themselves. Paint the picture and help them see how your product or service will improve things for our world and their loved ones. That's how you bring a team along. Please note: Its important this is genuine. People can tell a mile off if it's not!

When people can see, understand and learn from their actions, then those actions are most likely to be honed. Its very hard to make changes to the picture you are painting if you're unable to see what you've painted!

Moreover, changing external factors, whether it be economic trends, market factors, or competitors, may require your team to course correct to be able to land the right impact. Discussing progress must be done with candor, communicating fully the achievements, as well as the risks. The leadership is there to help your team to achieve it's goals, not to judge. Consider at each of these 'checkpoints' what the 'critical questions' you want leadership to answer for you, given this update. It's remarkable what can happen if you just feel confident to ask.

Having a dozen goals isn't better than having 3 goals - most often it's much worse, because people don't know what to focus on. This is not a transitory value proposition for a product. For instance, IBM is in the same business as it was 50 years ago even though its products and services have changed dramatically. When an organization can accurately identify what makes it uniquely remarkable, the response from employees is "Finally I know what business we are REALLY in and how to articulate this powerfully to others". That alone will motivate employees to cooperate more effectively, unify them around a common goal and empower them to perform at a higher level.

As an executive coach, I advise leaders to first clearly define and communicate the company's goals in a compelling manner. It's crucial to connect each team member's role to these goals, showing how their contributions matter. To align the team with goals, the most important piece to communicate is the 'big picture' and the role they play in that picture-> why and what. People like to know how valued they are and how they are contributing to build that big picture. People align and deliver with ownership and accountability when they feel valued and recognized.

As a team member, I have to see myself in the goal. Why am I here on this team in this company serving this goal? Who cares? If I don’t care, I’m definitely in the wrong place. And this speaks to the alignment of values. So… Invite the team to ponder and answer why they’re there and why they stay there. Reconcile the impact they have to the impact that they want to have. Reconcile the natural giftedness to the work at hand to deliver the goals.

I would recommend to build goal conversations into regular communications and messaging in team meetings and employee one on ones. This will reinforce, remind, and align employees across the organization to connect with company initiatives and decisions to the underlying organizations goals.

When you can articulate what makes the organization uniquely remarkable in a clear, concise and compelling phrase, you can use it to do 2 powerful things: 1. Design a top level strategic narrative that guides all of its communications so that everyone is singing from the same songbook (branding, marketing and sales), and 2. Design every aspect of how it operates (R&D, marcomm, org structure, CSR, CRM, HR, manufacturing, etc.) so that all parts of the business work in unity toward a common goal. What this means is that everything the organization does and says (its operations in communications) will be consistently uniquely remarkable because their design is based on the ONE thing that makes the organization uniquely remarkable.

Make it relevant to the team / division: sometimes the goals are difficult to relate to when you are not directly involved e.g., sales growth as a retailer but you are in a supply chain division. The team needs to understand the role they play and how it contributes to the wider company. Communication is key. I find that having regular touch base sessions and incorporating the teams view in your approach makes a positive difference.

SMART goals are key to achieving success on organizational level. It helps the team find shared grounds through which their work can be aligned into achieving organizational goals

I've found it to be more likely for a team to embrace a company goal when they feel some ownership in the steps to achieve the goals and the results. From the overarching strategic goals, pick out the ones that directly relate to your team, and (alongside the departmental goals you're already working on) meet regularly to discuss progress and adaptions needed.
