part of the challenge is getting to know who you truly are, beyond the masks you utilize to survive the system as it’s designed. coping mechanisms from challenging times in life can solidify into personality traits as we just try to make it through the day. these incredibly human tendencies can’t help but show up in the ways that we lead people. if you haven’t met yourself at that depth, find people who can challenge you to get there. it’s the best investment you can make as a leader.

I've long encouraged growing leaders (regardless of stage) to complete & maintain a "Coat of Arms", a well-considered statement of goals and standards (short, simple words, phrases, images) that they believe deeply in, and aspire to.The exercise is more for their own benefit than anyone else's. I do it. Being forced, for example, to consider what you might like written on your tombstone can be thought-provoking, and behavior shaping. That said, there's no harm in sharing the perspective with those whom they'll likely engage over a protracted period. Indeed, occasionally soliciting feedback from one or two trusted associates who know you well and care enough to speak the truth can be eye opening, and perhaps, thought provoking, too. Try it.

Authenticity is a "muddy" concept. When you are growing, you are likely changing and that can feel like you are forging a new self, risking overriding the "old", "true" self. Finding your values takes time, reflection, investment. A start might be by searching the internet for a list of, or engaging with genAI on, "leadership values". It's easier to work through a list than face a blank page. You might have a conversation with your genAI to help you surface what your values are. There's some truth in taking on a new identity as you grow. You have to ask yourself if there's more risk in growing than in staying the same. Maintain close connections to check in with who you are to them, or who you are becoming.
