Active listening and asking questions for understanding to make people feel heard and understood will also help build trust and help the team succeed.

In addition to open communication and getting the team to share their background and skill set with each other, I’ve found it helpful to connect team members through a personal topic or shared interest. This helps them find common ground, which creates better mutual understanding and breaks the ice for smoother collaboration. When team members feel connected and supported, they can collaborate better, which not only helps us deliver the project successfully but also strengthens relationship within the team for future projects delivery.

No one is expert in all domains. Cross functional collaboration is all about learning from each other in the interest of the individual, customer, project and organisation as a whole. This message has to be explicitly communicated to the cross functional team. Different backgrounds are even more better as we get to know about different cultures, practices and etiquette. It’s all about learning. The team should be open for ideas, deliberations and open feedback where in each one of us can come to know our strengths, weaknesses and this is a great opportunity to equip ourselves from knowledge shared by others there by serving our customers much better than before.
