First, to make culture of inclusion workplace and respect. By reminding to my team to be patient and respectful when communicating with colleagues who are less fluent in the primary language. Using simple words and communicate clearly even if making environment soft by asking as "what is it in your language?'' showing the interest and respect to them. No Judgment Zone: Encourage team members to ask for clarification without fear of judgment. Share diagrams, pictures, or videos to explain ideas and some tools. Make an environment that can help each other in language skills and celebrate everyone’s efforts to communicate, even if it’s not perfect. Again and again make inclusive work environment that everyone can feel safe and welcoming.

In my experience, language barriers often stem from lack of empathy and unconscious bias against those who aren’t fluent in the predominant language. Overcoming this requires patience, understanding and a mindset shift: We must remember that we might face similar challenges in another context. Encouraging open communication starts with creating a safe space where team members feel respected, regardless of language proficiency. Additionally, we must encourage organizations to implement tools like language learning platforms or provide professional training to support fluency over time. Ultimately, fostering a collaborative culture reminds everyone that we are working toward shared goals, rowing together in the same direction.

First stage, I prefer to use visual appeal such as poster or flow process diagram to make sure our information reach to all our team with the same understanding. Next stage is to develop some key person on our team to learn that language. So, at the end they will be a group leader and can communicate well with the rest of our team with their language and also with their similar culture to our team.

- Buddy System: Pair team members with language proficiency with those who need support. - Language Training: Offer language training or courses to help team members improve their language skills. -Feedback Mechanisms: Establish feedback mechanisms to identify and address language-related issues. -Collaboration Tools: Leverage collaboration tools, like Slack or Trello, with built-in translation features. -Multilingual Documentation & Visual aid: Maintain multilingual documentation to ensure everyone can access important information. Utilize diagrams, flowcharts, images, and videos to facilitate understanding.

Language barrier is a minor issue in this age of technology, as ample tools are available to translate. In my opinion more important thing would be to make the person comfortable to communicate in their language and others need to be more receptive and understanding to help him/her put across their point with ease and confidence. Slowly and steadily the barrier will reduce or at later stage get removed

Ice-breaking sessions to humorously address the language barrier would relieve some of the tension. Games like Chinese whispers, or pictionary could help. Secondly, encourage people to allow using translators to get their point across. Find a balance between texts/email and in-person meetings to get everyone more comfortable with each other. Try to look at it from a different angle, for example, any-time you are not able to get your thought across - act it out! There is no need to be super serious when everyone is working towards a common goal. I am currently dealing with this as an international student who is involved in multiple group projects and these methods have helped. It also helps if people have their thought prepared prior.

Overcoming language barriers in a team requires recognising cultural differences and avoiding assumptions about shared experiences or familiarity with jargon/idiomatic expressions. By emphasising clear, straightforward communication and fostering patience and understanding, it’s possible to create a work environment where everyone feels confident contributing and collaborating.

Language is a means of communication it's not a communication itself . Person poor in english should be given an option to express whichever the language he/she is comfortable with with out being judgemental .As a leader encouraging and communicating by bending yourself to your team level is the key. Your actions make you a leader not the title . A genuine interest to see your team growing.
