Design change during the construction is a common problem and it's becoming increasingly common problem during the construction phase. It's a big challenge for pharmaceutical and mission crtical project as these projects construction duration are very short.These challenge need to be mange on dealiy basis and include in risk register and also in schedule to see if there is any impact on program.My suggestion will be to get construction team involved during the Design phase so they can do the constructibilty review and during the construction there should be atleast one engineer full time onsite to deal with these challenges.

Nothing is perfect in this world. Unexpected changes are part of project execution. If you hit by unexpected change - keep your mind open and flexible. Evaluate calmly the changes and their likely impact on project. - involve key team members in case help is needed to assess the impact. - involve stakeholders with timely intimation and be ready with your action plan. - out of box thinking and ideas to help mitigate the impact - if change is inevitable, include in revised plan asap - follow change management process - after incorporation of change, create lessons learnt and RCA to incorporate in QMS to avoid repetition of same in future. Management of change is key to project success as changes are some times out of your influence sphere.

First of all, as a design manager/lead, should anticipate major/minor changes during the process. its responsibility of the lead to evaluate and access impact to project cost, timeline, safety ,etc before make a decision to accept the change in whole, make changes or reject the changes. If there is an impact to project cost and timeline, all stakeholders should be consulted before making the final decision.

Each request should undergo a objective review, with clear technical justifications to get the approvals. Unexpected changes in a design project are common, and they can disrupt the flow if not handled well. When faced with these changes, the first step I take is to stay calm and assess the situation. I look at what changed, why it happened, and how it impacts the overall design. Once I understand the situation, I focus on flexibility. Adapting to new requirements or challenges often means adjusting the design or timeline, but I make sure to prioritize the project’s main goals.

This type of change to the base scope of the project must be recorded costed and added into the management of change system and sent to the client for approval. This would include changes the the schedule and delivery dates and costs. Only once the client had approved the change estimates should you include the new scope into the project and implement those additional changes. Job done

It's very natural to come across unexpected changes during the Detail Engineering phase of the majority of projects. Now, to face these unavoidable challenges, there are various trackers that should be maintained rigorously like Risk register, HOLD lists, Change management, FIeld design change Notices, Key decision logs etc. It's very important to update those lists / trackers time to time , access the impacts, implement those changing by alignment of the same with client and to keep align all the stake holders simultaneously in the project.
