First, assess the interruption's impact, identifying what's salvageable and what needs immediate attention. Communicate transparently with stakeholders about delays and reset expectations. Prioritize tasks by urgency and importance, focusing on high-impact areas first. Delegate effectively, leveraging the strengths of your team to distribute the workload. Reallocate resources if needed and set clear, achievable mini-deadlines. To maintain momentum, keep team morale high with consistent updates and celebrate small wins. Finally, reflect on the interruption — was it avoidable? Use the learning to mitigate future risks. Refocusing isn't just about speed; it’s about smart, strategic recovery.

As a dissertation coach, I'm excited to share two strategies to help you bounce back from project interruptions and regain momentum. Strategy 1: Rapid Recovery Assessment Instead of feeling overwhelmed, take a quick 1-3 day audit of your dissertation's current state. Create a visual progress map highlighting completed sections, work-in-progress areas, and remaining tasks. This will help you reorient yourself and give you a clear picture of where to dive back in. Strategy 2: Parallel Task Processing Implement fast-tracking techniques by identifying dissertation components that you can work on simultaneously. For ex., while waiting for supervisor feedback on one chapter, you can start formatting the sections you've already completed.

In addition to what assessing, prioritizing, and communicating I think it’s important to start with acknowledging what’s going on. Give people time to feel, be heard, and be reassured there is a plan to better understand the issue and get everything back on track. When you address heads and hearts you can get the hands to work
