When a brand finds itself in a crisis, it’s essential to take proactive steps to protect its reputation, especially with influencers who might see this as an opportunity to benefit themselves. The first step is to establish open communication with your influencers, keeping them in the loop about what’s happening and how you’re responding. This transparency not only builds trust but also helps prevent the spread of misinformation. Engaging influencers directly can also shape the narrative in a way that reflects your brand’s values. By sharing accurate information and offering them insights on how to address the situation.

In a brand crisis, clear communication with influencers is key to preventing them from exploiting the situation. I ensure that influencers are fully briefed on the issue and provide them with updated messaging guidelines that align with the brand’s crisis response. By fostering open dialogue and reinforcing our partnership, I encourage influencers to act responsibly and support the brand rather than using the crisis for personal gain. This helps protect both the brand's reputation and the integrity of the collaboration.

To prevent influencers from capitalizing on your brand's crisis, act quickly and transparently. First, communicate openly with your partnered influencers, providing them with the facts and your brand's official response. Set clear guidelines on what they can share, emphasizing the importance of responsible messaging. Monitor social channels closely, and if needed, address any negative or exploitative posts directly. Having a crisis clause in influencer contracts can also deter opportunistic behavior by outlining consequences for actions that harm the brand.

The question isn't as much about influencers benefitting as it is about consumers believing, I believe. The crisis if it truly exists should not only be handled internally but also externally. Speaking to consumers directly with a clarification (if the issue deserves direct clarification like the case of Mondelez, Nestle) and to do so quickly can help abate negative PR. Shirking away, denial can alienate consumers further. (Like Boeing, Volkswagen) Or if the issue seems fabricated and untrue, engaging with influencers and asking them to experience the office, factory first hand to assure them can help. At the same time, consumer and PR comms building a narrative to counter the claims may help tide over the situation.
