In my experience, i have come across situations like this but mostly found that it was not only pertaining to one side as communication is both ways. Even when considering that its the boss who is not good in communications, there has to be something that can work i.e, a discussion outside office environment where a typical office discussion occurs; Ice can break outside daily routine easily.

It should all be done with the intent to clear out the communication process and this can be done in ways that are convenient for you as well as the boss.

Some bosses don't like you sending them messages every now and then. So before sending them an email, or anything make sure it is what they will like to hear. Communicate properly so they will know when your message is important.

I would review communications every day. Especially with your boss to understand what kind of person is: logical, emotional, fun, etc. Understating what kind of personally is behind the other person could give a plus to have better communication and synergy.

We're talking here about your boss. In this problem-scenario you don't need to be a better communicator, they do. I am persuaded that you must do 2 things: Talk live (not text-based), and paraphrase a lot. "I want to make sure I don't run off and do the wrong thing well. Can I ask what you mean by...?" "So what you're saying is...have I got that right?" Paraphrasing will show your boss he/she isn't being as clear as they think. It will also cause them to gradually become more clear and precise.

This sometimes requires creativity and daring to do thing differently. Once in my career I had to literraly make the performance. No talking, just role playing a little scenario for impact. However, in this case, I have assessed that our GM was open enough for this experimentative approach. It was risky, but got me further than any other communication skill ever did.
