In assisting clients with unique needs, it's important to have a strategy in place to avoid unnecessary usage of time and resources. I start these discussions by inviting the client to explain the issue, provide examples of impact, and outline any feedback given on attempted resolutions. This allows me to not only understand where my client stands, but to find common ground for building trust as we move forward. Reading nonverbal cues (facial expressions, body language, and vocal tone) helps me to guage the client's emotional level and adjust mine to maintain neutrality and ensure a productive conversation. I finalize with a request for clarification on the notes I've taken and a promise to follow up within a reasonable time frame.
