What do you do if you want to impress employers during an interview?

Get a grip on their goals and how you can slide right in like the last piece of a puzzle. ✔️ Dig into their products ✔️ Who they serve ✔️ Who's gunning for their spot And here's the secret sauce: figure out who's going to grill you and what makes 'em tick. Understanding your audience isn't just about nodding and smiling; it's about speaking their language and showing them you're the missing piece they've been hunting for.

Trying to impress people is a fool's errand. Do your due diligence on the organization and the hiring manager(s). Be articulate with your response. Be authentic and don't shy away from stating what you believe in. Remember, an interview is a two-way street. You have the distinct opportunity to assess the culture, integrity, and values of the people interviewing you. Know your value and what you're able to contribute. We are wired to judge. This is how we have survived for millions of years. If your authenticity and skills aren't a match, so be it. The right opportunity will come at the right time. Be steadfast with your values and what you believe in. They are the foundation of your success and legacy.

First, dress for the job. Jeans and flip flops don't work when interviewing for a professional office job. Some don't realize that it is still important to employers. Next, do your research on the company and provide them with something that you like about their values and mission and how your values align with the employer. Employers like to hear about how well they are doing and like to talk about their company. See if any of your linkedin connections work at the company and they may be able to give you some guidance or insight. Stay positive and upbeat and show how you are the best person for the job! Be confident.

It's also helpful to follow their recent news so you can speak to it in the interview. It is always a good idea to have 7-10 intentional, thoughtful, and smart questions prepared to ask. If you have any mutual connections to the company or person/people you are meeting with, check in with your connection to gain potential insights. It's also helpful to have companies/work you've done with similar industries at the top of your mind to leverage during your interview.

No shame in a practice session!

If you are the type of person who wants to learn, share, and explore, this becomes easy. Keep an updated LinkedIn profile and make sure to use every opportunity that will create some publicity and marketing for you. Writing impactful articles, papers, publications, whitepapers, doing videos, podcasts, speaking at conferences, volunteering,... - all that counts.

Understand the company and vacancy. Know what is expected from you and how you are a good fit for the role. It includes your experience, qualifications, extra gained knowledge, and internships. Research the interviewers to know their specialization. It helps to filter the area among numerous topics and domains that require more preparation. You must build confidence with practice and exhibit the same to the panel. Greet the interviewers, state your name, and introduce yourself without fear. Be audible and bold to showcase your respect for the opportunity. Introduction can include education qualifications and experience depending on your level of expertise. Try to include information different from what is already mentioned in the resume.

You're stepping into that interview room, and it's game time. No beating around the bush. You're there to flaunt what you've got — your strengths. But hey, nobody cares about a laundry list of skills. They want stories — real-life situations where you saved the day. Paint a picture using STAR: 🔘 Situation 🔘 Task 🔘 Action 🔘 Result Show 'em how you tackled problems head-on, kicked challenges to the curb, and came out on top. Skip the generic fluff; dive deep into your victories. That's what'll make 'em sit up and take notice.

The STAR method is a great recommendation. Being able to share examples of how you solved specific problems and the outcomes are what hiring managers want to hear about.

If you are smart enough and if the employer knows you, you don't have to tell a lot about you. But getting here is not easy. Let the numbers and achievements speak.

Avoid jargon and be honest in your answers. Dress appropriately, arrive on time and be polite and respectful to everyone you meet.

You already want the employer to envision you as part of the team, and you can accomplish this by using certain phrases, "we" language, and bringing up aspects of the job. It helps to know why you are excited about the particular opportunity and be able to give insights into why you are a synergetic match based on the job description, RFP, etc., and company. If presented with a thought-provoking question that you don't have an immediate response to, it's ok to say that it's interesting and say something like let me think about that for a second, and pause to respond thoughtfully.

You've got to own it, buddy! Your vibe sets the tone. Confidence? Check. Enthusiasm? Double check. But remember, there's a thin line between confident and cocky and enthusiastic and desperate. Keep it balanced. Flash that winning smile, lock eyes, and let your voice ooze positivity. Show you're pumped for the gig and the company. Let them know you're ready to soak up knowledge like a sponge. There is no room for negativity or trash-talking past gigs. Stay classy, stay upbeat. That's the winning formula.

Wear a suit. Come prepared, if possible with a copy of you CV and work. Know answers to common questions that are expected to be asked.

During the many interviews I have conducted over time, I have always placed a fair amount of weight on how the interviewee prepared for the interview, and the type of questions they asked. Insightful questions will get you noticed. I have found two specific categories of questions will generate very positive reactions: asking about the culture, and inquiring for specifics on how the interviewer defines success in the role.

Make sure to have questions prepared for the specific role you are being considered for. Show interest for performing the job well, add value to the position and company, and even your own growth. Never forget to ask what is expected from a successful employee in the position you are applying to; that will not only give you a clear idea of what the expectations of the role are, but also will show that you are interested in being a good player.

In her TED Talk, Journalist Celeste Headlee uses her experiences as an interviewer and research from psychological studies to show that we can have conversations that leave us "engaged, inspired, and connected." She suggests taking a lesson from her interviewing skills and using open-ended questions rather than yes or no questions. Start your questions with words like who, what, where, when, or how to build a better understanding and deeper connection.

What aspects of the company's vision, excite you the most? How does the company foster a collaborative culture among its employees? Can you share an example of a recent challenge the team faced and how they overcame it? How does this role contribute to the company's overall goals? What opportunities are there for professional development within the organization? How does the company support its employees' growth and learning? What do you think sets successful employees apart in this company?

Ask questions throughout, make the interview conversational - if you get to the end and you're asked "do you have any questions for us?", you've left it too late. What you should hope to hear is "do you have any more questions for us?".

Prepare more questions than you need - including some that aren't likely to be addressed in the course of the interview. This is especially important in late-stage interviews when you'll likely be speaking with more senior decision-makers. (You don't want to be caught saying the dreaded "Well, we already covered all my questions!") The most important question I ask: - Is there anything in my experience or our conversation today that gives you pause about my ability to excel in this role? Be Real! Be Authentic! Attempt to share is the smartest and most structured format anything that will help know the real you. It's important to be selected only if you are the right fit, this will not only get you the job, it will also ensure that you succeed in it.

Share specifics on the results that you delivered. What metrics were you tracking? Where and how did you make the most business impact in your role? How did you move the needle? I find that this approach garners THE MOST interest from hiring managers.

The more senior the role, the more work you should put in. Build a presentation and/or plan, and aim to deliver that. Controlling at least some of the interview time will help you make a stronger case for your employment.

Suppose you don't land the gig; it's no big deal! Let it go, but you can learn from it. Ask for feedback about the experience and why they did not go with you, and be sure to follow up if they provide any feedback. Reiterate your interest in a long-term relationship/future opportunities by setting a reminder to check in with the point of contact in the months following the decision.

First, I would like you to understand that the idea is not to impress but to be authentic. When you are interviewing for a role - it's a two-way street. Know that as much as your employer wants to know you, you are equally interviewing that boss/ company for your career fit. So get clear on your WHY! What do you want your legacy or life work to be? Who are the employers who could meet you in that passion? From there, be yourself, speak your values, show your strengths, and what and how you bring value to the table. Be humble but self-assured! Have a servant leadership mindset and speak to how you can contribute to greater success. In other words, Stop "the ME TALK."

I think that anything you can show in terms of demonstrating that you "did your homework" (i.e. you investigated about the company) will go a long way. Now, if you did do your homework, then you will be able to show it not only through a comment or describing how you feel you align with the Mission and Values, but through asking strategic/thought provoking questions... That should do the trick!

Impress... Hm. Ask yourself first... "Am I impressed with myself?" This is the root of authentic connection. Do you admire yourself? The way you engage with others. Are you honest? Are you comfortable wiht yourself? Are your shoes polished? Your shoes don't need to be name brand or even new, but are they cared for? These are all silent indicators that we feel, that we recognize, and traits that, perhaps unconsciously nudge us to learn more about you. Be reminded of the roots of emotional intelligence, and social awareness like this. We don't have to be perfect or know every answer, but we must recognize our own value and show up.
