Creating an increasingly equal community is a lifetime endeavour, probably starting with the following: 1. Let your behaviour speak for you in terms of advocating equity and accessibility. 2. Stay curious about why the discrimination started ages ago. Acknowledge that there must have been some reason for it, even if that reason is not sensible enough. 3. Communicate how those very reasons no longer exist today and/or serve any purpose to any group in the community. 4. Remain as non-accusatory as possible. Connect to their stories of discrimination and denied access. 5. Allow everyone to feel empowered and skilful enough to make their own choice in favour of equity and accessibility.

Teniendo mayor atención en casos con discapacidad. Si se identifican sus necesidades y capacidades, se podrán facilitar estrategias y garantizar el acceso a una educación alegre, diversa y de calidad. Para ello actualmente cada institución debe comprometerse en ese camino. I have found it helpful to keep re-identifying my stakeholders. This is because there are often people who may be grouped together, who may initially appear to have only subtle differences, but are actually distinct.

There is a time when I was at USC debating the issues of equity and utilizing research. I waswas then so called, ‘educating’ and what I thought winning the debates until I literally got tired of hearing my own voice, and begin to listen. Giving freedom to my brothers and sisters on the other side of the debate, to express vulnerability, concerns, and their perspectives, I realized how important it is to have, the skill set to listen. We walked away with those debates. Feeling much better about each other’s points of view, I owe the bulk of the successes in these debates to the ability to listen and learn. I have never learned more about educating until I learned how to listen. I never learned more in life, until I learned to listen.

I have often found that understanding the culture of the community groups and how they communicate can help with planning decisions on the best time and space, for example,in an African rice farming village, I would best work with women while in the fields, taking a late morning break.
