In my own experience, both as an instructor/ participant, virtual workshops are more tiring and challenging when it comes to sustaining engagement throughout the session. Over the years, I have explored few strategies as below: 1) Energizers - quick, fun activities at appropriate time to disrupt status quo with physical movement where possible 2) Schedule frequent short breaks for participants to recharge 3) Regularly engage with participants to seek feedback on the session and implement adjustments in real time 4) Incorporate surprising element to keep participants intrigued, for an example offering small rewards for participation, ending the session earlier than planned when specific conditions are met

In my experience, the first and the foremost success strategy for effective virtual engagement is the duration of a virtual session. An ideal session for utmost attention is of 40 to 45 mins ; but in case the session needs to go on till about 1 to 1.5 hrs, using various web tools and strategies helps a lot. A single resource person speaking for long duration or a long PPT presentation tends to bring monotony and leads to disengagement. A well balanced integration of lecture, visual presentations, videos, online quizzes and breakout rooms for group discussions make for retained attention and maximizing engagement.
