Desde mi experiencia, la mejor manera de hacer inmersión comunitaria es a través de un diagnóstico participativo, en donde la comunidad objeto/sujeto de la intervención, entiende las problemáticas con el apoyo de un experto o un equipo de expertos externos. Así mismo, plasma dichas circunstancias usando cartografía social y prioriza las problemáticas más sentidas. Firstly a "community" is not a homogenous entity. It is a group of people each with their own identities, challenges and priorities. The rule therefore is to first understand who constitutes the community and how do the community represent themselves and the factors that either enable / disable them from being cohesive. We will always remain an "outsider" and our intent should be unbiased and not indulge in establishing personal connections with dominant individuals in the community group. This is particularly important in planning an interview, people are likely to be guarded/ biased in their responses which may not reflect the actual situation.

The most fundamental aspects of community engagement are to listen and learn. As a qualitative researcher who engages in community outreach, I have repeatedly discovered the importance of active listening for effective community engagement. You cannot study a community if you do not listen first. You cannot offer services such as asthma education to any community until they trust you and believe you. It is presumptuous and even arrogant for any person or group to rush in thinking they can help or have the answer(s). Listening and learning are the first priority before anything else. Once the community knows, trusts and respects you, then the true research or assistance can begin. One exception would be initial disaster relief efforts.

No matter the problem a community faces, communities have strength that can be optimized. The onus is the ability to critically evaluate the community’s problems/issues and ask yourself what you are going to do about it. Do you see the community’s problems through and through, or challenges and opportunities despite the problems? You should have eyes for challenges and opportunities and develop strategies to mitigate the problems. Do your research about the community, show interest in the issues. Do a critical analysis of the community’s need. Use metrics to capture the issues, and how you intend to reduce the pain. These will endear you to the interviewer.
