I don’t want to sound like an echo chamber, but really listening to a prospective new client will help to make or limit a trusting relationship. Listening and watching for cues of discomfort, embarrassment, or anger/frustration, as well as asking questions of them to provide just a bit more context, and then, this is the important part, letting them finish their statements before jumping in and talking over them is huge. It sounds basic to those who haven’t mastered this yet, but it’s a differentiator for those who haven’t mastered. It’s an emotionally intelligent skill to control yourself first so you can become aware of and of service to others.
