En los proyectos es una buena práctica introducir una actividad de "ingeniería de valor" de forma que se propongan acciones sobre el diseño para optimizar los costes. Se asegura la calidad asegurando el cumplimiento de la especificación técnica y la normativa de calidad que rija el proyecto y el contrato. Sin embargo, si normativa y especificación contractual están por encima de los estándares internacionales y se puede aportar una solución de "value engineering" que cumpla con dichos estándares aunque se desvíe de la especificación de calidad contractual; se puede abrir una negociación con el cliente de forma que se comparta el ahorro que genera esa ingeniería de valor con el cliente a cambio de que nos acepte un "waiver" al contrato.
