When you’re developing your funding requests, pay attention to key details linked to the funders partnership priorities, patterns and funding timelines. Effectively negotiating partnership project funding requires you to have a keen understanding of the goals and priorities of each partner. You must also have a clear understanding of where their priorities and goals intersect and align with yours. Clarity in this regard will allow you to discern the specific funding amount, presentation style and type of data you should use. It will also help you identify an approach that will help you establish mutually beneficial short and long term success.

Some things I keep at the front of my head are to be confident, clear, concise, and credible ! 1) Confident, Clear, & Credible- Remain professional AND passionate. Highlight your mission, measurable outcomes, and community impact up front ! 2) Concise - Have a compelling elevator pitch ready at all times. Stay ready, so you don't have to get read. 3) Be flexible- Negotiate beyond money ! Consider in-kind support, technical assistance, or other non-monetary resources. Some of my go-to supports are moderating panel discussions, assisting with organizing future events, securing speakers for events, and making connections with other partners. 4) Transparency- Clearly outline your funding needs. Be prepared to hear NO & move on to the next !
