Demanding and stressed clients can sometimes overwhelm us but what can change the way we perceive things is- mindfulness. Following strategies can help us in dealing with this situation. ~ Have deep breaths. ~ Take a short break and stretch your body to increase the blood flow ~ Remind yourself that this is just a situation and this too shall pass. ~ Try to respond not to react ~ Last but not the least- imagine that person sitting in front of you and send positive thoughts and energy to him, this will instantly calm him and help him relax. Trust me, this is known as sending energy through thoughts and this process works really well.

I was right in the middle of a presentation to the CEO of a billion-dollar company when the CEO stopped me by raising his hand in disgust and said: "Why don't you stop using ridiculous fancy words and speak like a normal person?" Ok, a bit harsh, but in this case, he was right. Sometimes, embarrassing feedback is spot on, as in this case. I stayed calm, apologized, and quickly changed my pitch from marketing jargon to being real and speaking in my own words, not someone else's. That was 20 years ago, and I remember it well. I learned to filter out a person's tone, emotions, and signs of stress...stay calm, and remember to breathe and hear what is really being communicated.

Well things that I do myself and coach my mentees also; - Always write your day a night before - Make sure you open your eyes with few deep breaths and be happy you are sane and sound - Always communicate professionally and don't mix personal life in it - Be in present moment and listen to every conversation carefully - Confirm your understanding always, there is no stupid question - Break out from time to time to reset your thought and emotional patterns.

My technique to stay mindful in the chaos is to focus on the breath. If I'm out around others, I gently look down to my belly and see it rise and contract or place my hand on my belly to feel the movement. I take this moment to listen and observe the situation before speaking and taking action. I think this has helped me be empathetic to how others react under stress.

One way to manage a sense of overwhelm with a client's stress (or anyone else's) is to imagine them as a gift. At the beginning of the session or conversation, think of the experience as an unwrapping of this gift, then envision yourself gently wrapping the gift back up again at the close of it. This use of imagery can be helpful in both holding them in a place of value and keeping the energy contained in a place outside of ourselves. This can be especially useful for those of us who are highly sensitive and/or those who tend to easily absorb the energy of others to a detrimental level. Additionally, we must bear in mind that whatever energy someone is bringing is theirs, based on their story and their experiences. BREATHE, stay calm, flow.
