Thought leadership like a lot of unstructured activities is a continuous process of stepping through membranes of fear, one after the other. You need to stretch yourself and enlarge your comfort zone by trying things that are a little bit scary - new and scarier things every day. Imposter syndrome is fear. (Also, it’s a made-up syndrome - like so many other syndromes pop culture loves to talk about.) It’s just fear. The imposter syndrome will fade away as your confidence level grows. So, scare yourself! Speak at a big event. Reach out to a publication suggesting that you write for them. Do the scariest thing you can think of. Do something with high stakes. Your comfort zone will grow fast and keep growing – and so will you.

Imposter syndrome lives in narrative — what we tell ourselves and what we tell others. Self-talk actually impacts what others tell others about who we are and what we can offer. If we approach our thought leadership brand strategy with doubt, hesitancy, or a belief we will be seen as fake, those feelings can easily leak into how we project and communicate our value. The impact could be a loss of credibility, erosion of trust, and reputation crisis. If feelings of doubt creep in, or imposter syndrome or self-rejection shows up for you, here’s what I suggest: Resist the temptation to stop your progress. Enlist the support of those who believe in you, and be mindful of your self-talk.
