Setting clear goals and expectations is vital but when deadlines are missed check the understanding of those goals. Clear communication helps with this, simple, focused goals obviously work but what is understandable to one person may not be so to another. Understanding the obstacles is also important, how can the team refocus to overcome these. Encourage honesty in communication, it is a strength to recognise difficulties not a weakness. The team may be able to support and find solutions. This also develops future skills. It is through adversity that strength grows - steel is forged in fire.

One of the things that work best for me is breaking the team into subgroups. Where each subgroup works in synergy with another lead they find fit. The best of the team may not be visible when each person works in isolation. I would rather merge them in 2 and 3 than leave each team member to meet the deadline singly. With this hitting the target will be faster than expected. This works so well for me personally.
