Giving students a set amount of money, grocery ads and let them plan dinner for the week. The students must look through the ads and compare prices to see if they will have enough money to buy the groceries that they will need to plan their meals. Actually I gently disagree that real world examples are necessary. While we do need some sort of content to talk about, for example, money, sizes of stuff, how fast something moves, in my experience students don't mind if it's 'real' examples or not. They would happily calculate the area of pink fluffy elephants and how many cats one can fit into a four dimension based spaceship - as long as it helped them pass the school end exam. High school students are currently socialized to be test and achievement driven. They mostly want to achieve higher grades than their peers. And those students who come to love math love it for the satisfaction of solving puzzles. I'm not sure if 'realness' factors in in this regard.

A story on a Mathematical concept: Once a teacher asked the 9th std. students to add up 1+2+...upto 100 & went to sleep. Everyone got busy. One student found the answer in 2 minutes & woke up the teacher. The teacher said, "Now find up to 1000" & went to sleep. The student again woke up the teacher in 2 min. & gave the correct answer 5050. The intrigued teacher saw how this student did it accurately & so fast. He noticed that he wrote the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...99,100 and just below them wrote the numbers in reverse order 100,99,98,97,96...Then he added the numbers to get 101, 101,101... 100 times. The student was smart to notice the total of 10100 was of 2 sets & divided it by 2. That's Arithmetic Progression for you. Now try upto 100,000

Desse modo, os exemplos devem, quando possíveis, seguir uma linha radial onde o centro é o cotidiano do aluno com exemplificação simples. Partindo daí, é cabível que os exemplos possam abordar maior carga teórica e, também, de abstração.

Embora fiquem mais distante da realidade, já garantem habilidade de interpretar e manipular as informações e dados. Em seguida vamos tornando o problema gradativamente mais complexo e, por consequência, mais real.
