Second, invite some community members to shadow some students for a day, looking for evidence that the mission & vision is “living” in the actions and work throughout the school. If theses litmus tests go well, your mission & vision is probably good to go. If not, they indicate that it should probably be revamped via empathy interviews, focus groups, etc).

I think the mission can stay in place for many years but the vision should be reviewed and modified minimally every two years, to take best note of the new tools that are constantly available to us if we are paying enough attention. We speak often (and correctly) the need to be constantly and consistently differentiated curriculum for our students. We must do the same by regularly differentiating our vision for our various stakeholders -- someone wanting to make a donation deserves a different facet of our vision than does a parent or legal guardian. Our staff deserves a differentiated view of our vision as it affects them. For our staff to be student- centered, we as administrators need to be staff-centered as well as student-centered.
