When soliciting feedback, I would always seek out my direct manager. Only under extreme and immediate circumstances would I contact anyone above their role, and made sure I had all information prepared for questions. Regular feedback is important for mitigating any issues or concerns that could impact personal performance and/or company success. When giving feedback, I would present areas in need of improvement, and invite an open conversation to discuss ways of solving any issues that came to light.

I believe that this process should be challenging and uncomfortable given the prerequisite of strong relationships. People like working with consistent colleagues. On any task, they know what is expected and the results they are likely to receive. Consistency makes it a lot easier to plan schedules and needed tasks.

If you are leading a collaborative meeting, warm up your body language. Your warm body language (smiles, nods, open body posture, etc.) signal interest and agreement, which in turn encourages the speaker to share more personal insights and speculation. Negative body language triggers a threat response that causes the speaker to pull back into the relative “safety” of facts.
