You can have all your outputs completed but if they didn't have the outcome you expected from them, they are worthless.

As a Scrum master relevent metrics can be selected and track the amount of work completed in each sprint.Burn-down/Burn-up Charts help to tracks progress toward sprint or release goals, showing how much work remains (burn-down) or how much has been completed (burn-up). With the help of these metrics clear visibility can be provided into work status and quality, ensure alignment between the team and stakeholders.

It allows me to see how each person's velocity varies by sprints, so I can adjust workloads and avoid overloading anyone since everyone works at their own pace. The burndown chart, on the other hand, helps me track progress every day. It lets me identify early on if we’re on track to meet our sprint goals, so I can make any necessary adjustments.

Use visualizations such as charts, graphs, and color coding to make the data more accessible and actionable. They might not fully grasp the methodologies and frameworks we’re using. Ideally, I want to show metrics that help them understand the current status, progress, delays, sprint end dates, completed items, and so on. This gives them a quick insight into the project's status and might even help them ask more relevant and accurate questions.

Update the examples to get more insights in value delivered to users. For example market share, customer satisfaction results, customer usage index. When it comes to tools, put tools that improve both transparency and collaboration. Jira does not allow on the spot collaboration. Miro and Mural do. Jira makes it hard to visualise things without a lot of clicks to find the info. Miro and Mural do.

Craft dashboards that offer clarity and relevance. Prioritize simplicity, ensuring the most critical information is easily accessible. Use visual elements judiciously; color-coded indicators can enhance comprehension. Tailor dashboards to your audience—executives may favor high-level summaries, while teams benefit from more detailed views. Regularly reassess and refine to maintain effectiveness.

Criar painel de métricas deve ser como um painel de carro. Aparece os números principais para aquela utilização e alertas. Não sabemos quais números são que mostram problemas como Motor ou cambio, mas sabemos quando esta próximo de dar problema. Criando painéis eficientes podemos ter melhores resultados.

Make sure your dashboard isn’t overwhelming either; it should show the essentials at a glance, so the team and stakeholders can quickly get what’s happening. The goal is to help, not confuse. Clear visuals that highlight trends or issues are super important, so everyone knows where to act.

Metrics are only indicators. What matters is the conversation and action that follows. In agile terms, which most people keep forgetting, it is about inspecting and adapting. Metrics should bring the transparency that is needed to inspect (i.e. identify the gap between current and target).

Metrics are tools, not mandates. Avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. Interpret metrics in context, considering the unique aspects of your project. Foster a culture where metrics serve as conversation starters, prompting meaningful discussions rather than breeding blame. Encourage teams to collaboratively analyze and derive insights, promoting a shared responsibility for project success.

Be mindful of unintended consequences or gaming behaviors that may arise from focusing too heavily on certain metrics. I think it's important to keep in mind that these metrics in some cases can be misinterpreted and focusing too much on numbers might overshadow important aspects like team morale. Relying solely on metrics can give a false sense of security and put pressure on team members. It's important to align metrics with our overall goals and address any underlying issues instead of just trying to fix the numbers.

Reference the Obeya practices. There is a strong book called Leading With Obeya. There is also the Evidence Based Management framework which is a great reference.

Beyond metrics and dashboards, prioritize continuous improvement. Embrace a feedback loop—regularly assess the relevance and impact of your metrics. Stay attuned to changing project dynamics and adjust your metrics accordingly. Additionally, foster a transparent culture where teams feel empowered to share both successes and challenges.
