In my personal experience, client's own expectation, their defined roadmap is the starting point of this journey. Secondly, in line with scope/objective a review of gathered data would help.

I have a strong appreciation for The Natural Step framework when it comes to sustainability, particularly the ABCD process: Awareness and Vision, Baseline Analysis, Creative Solutions, and Decision on Priorities. This approach is highly effective in guiding our thinking towards a more desirable future. It begins with gaining a deep understanding of the current situation, then proceeds to the creation of innovative solutions, and ultimately culminates in a strategic plan to implement actions

In my experience to understand the maturity of client’s sustainability practices and performance one must start with the mission & vision of the organization, followed by baselining on other parameters like policies, energy consumption, water usage, HR practices etc. Next, analyze the client's use of sustainability metrics and its effectiveness in tracking progress toward sustainability goals. To identify gaps between the client's current practices and their envisioned sustainability goals, leveraging benchmarking against both peer performance and industry standards proves invaluable.

Defining the scope is one of the most difficult parts of client engagement - as 'I don't know what I need to know' comes into play. Is the client 'defining' the project to box tick specific ESG/carbon demands or is the consultant 'leading' the client to embed organisational resilience over a longer time horizon? The consultants level of expertise can often define the possibility of the scope - ESG data, carbon literacy, etc. Whilst there may be occasions where my team are brought in to deliver a niche project, generally I encourage clients to allow for greater investment in the holistic scope phase so that we can undertake a deep materiality assessment to identify risks, opportunities & dependancies and create a milestone strategy.
