If you have an on-premises monolithic application, there are two key design approaches to ensure high scalability - serverless microservices or containerization. The easiest first step is to lift-and-shift the monolith application to cloud, using a cloud virtual machine for example. The next step could be to convert the monolith into tiered architecture layers like frontend, application, and database layer. The next step would then be to either to containerize these layers using Docker and Kubernetes, or refactor the application using serverless APIs and services. AWS EKS and Fargate are some of the services to consider for containerized architecture. AWS Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB are go to services for serverless architectures.

Here my take on the steps to guarantee scalability by defining clear goals when designing a solution architecture: Performance Metrics: Define specific performance metrics, such as response time and throughput, that the system must achieve across different workloads. Scalability Strategy: Clearly specify how the system will handle increased demands, including accommodating additional users and data volume. Flexibility Planning: Strategically plan for future enhancements and seamless integrations, minimizing the need for extensive rework.

Popular scalable components are CDN(static content caching on edge servers), Avoid single point of failures and so having Elastic load balancers and smart cache like Elastic Cache backed by proxy routing. For reliable n/w infra we need multiple VPC so that systems can behave smartly based on different location. Monoliths don't scale well and often tends to crash being single point of failure. This can be avoided with multiple VPC and Route53. Code with fail safe design patterns for microservices.

Security is also an important aspect while designing any solution, especially when you dealing with micro services. You need to ensure what needs to be behind firewall and what is going to be user facing, and also what services will have access to what services in the whole solution to ensure least privilege access i.e database accessed by only app severs and app servers are accessed only by web servers in 3-tier architecture.

When designing a scalable solution architecture, I would consider the following key principles and components: statelessness (aim for stateless components), microservices architecture (break down the system into independently deployable services), event-driven architecture (design for asynchronous event handling), distributed systems (distribute workloads across servers), database sharding (divide databases into smaller shards), and load balancing (use load balancers for optimal resource distribution).

In my perspective, scalability comes as a mindset and it has many parameters to make something really scalable. Also sometimes it doesn't need to be scalable at the first place and bringing unnecessary things can overkill. So, how things should be used over the period of time is what it mostly drives. We can't also measure the scalability its always context based. Two primary things possibility need to keep in mind: 1. Loosely coupled 2. Abstraction and layering And most important how much it should be loose and how much layering it demands is again context based. Right choice of technology definitely serves the purpose because everything doesn't need to be in cloud. So balancing out all perhaps bring the value here.

You cannot scale what cannot be scaled. Some software and information technology components may not be well designed for scalability. If possible avoid incorporating such in your solution architecture. Once scalable components are identified you need to figure out the levels of scalability required by each component depending on the expected loads those components will handle at peak times of the day. One important critical times that architects usually ignore are the irregular spikes taking place even outside the peak hours windows. Analyze your solution to the extent that you can figure out peak loads of different components as well as potential irregular spikes if possible. In my own experience, I have witnessed many such instances where Solution Architecture was immensely encountered obstacles owing to the very fact that it is having such elements which were never designed with consideration that at some point of time the entire architecture would be subjected to scalability. Scalability is a wide spectrum domain. Although many components may share the same scalability pattern, you need to understand that different patterns serve different components' scalability goals. Cloud managed databases have special patterns that you need to learn and understand. Traffic and message queues do have different patterns. Micro-services and light weight server-less functions do have their own patterns. Learn the scalability design patterns and use the one that is good for the category of each component. It is hard to rely on theoretical knowledge, you need to experiment with different choices in actual lab using one or more of the available public clouds. Be aware of the different public clouds potentials for scalability .

It's important to note that stateful code is among the least scalable, at least if latency is important. To share state between threads (and therefore between containers/servers) you need either shared memory (e.g. Terracotta BigMemory) or a database (in-memory or not). Read from these can be quite quick, but write is often costly, especially if it's synchronous. Beware, and only store/share the state your application absolutely needs!

I would go serverless where possible. Use lambda services for short run jobs (devops or otherwise).Amazon EKS and Fargate serve real well when moving from monolith to microservices. Use Universal Scalability Law (USL) to model and to optimize scalability of your system. USL quantifies scalability based on parameters such as contention and coherency. Contention refers to delay due to waiting or queueing for shared resources. Coherence refers to delay for data to become consistent. For example, having a high contention indicates sequential processing that could be parallelized, while having a high coherency suggests excessive dependencies among processes, prompting you to minimize interactions. Also, with help of USL, you can, in advance, calculate the maximum effective capacity of your system: scaling up your system beyond that point is a waste.

In my experience, everyone wants cost effective scalable architecture rather expensive solutions. Since businesses like to invest in product development and R&D. There’s always quick agreement from stakeholders if an architecture pushes optimization with cost reduction. Another aspect to consider is security, scaling out shouldn’t increase attack surface under any circumstances.

No solution can provide an absolute guarantee of scalability, scalability is an ongoing process. One needs to consider many strategies around design, resources, cost management, redundancy planning, and most importantly alignment of different security requirements and standards.

Debido a que casi todos enfocamos hoy en día todo a la nube, por cierto la nube no va a resolver un código mal escrito…Yo agregaría patrones de arquitecturas Como Arquitectura Hexagonal, CQRS, Arquitectura por eventos y cuidar mucho la calidad y la reusabilidad del código, usando paquetes desacoplados o usando Software Componible, usar monorepos también puede ser una opción en algunos casos, para evitar desastres a largo plazo. Entiendo que hoy las empresas se mueven más por lo que está de moda sin ni siquiera hacer un estudio de si es aplicable en su contexto.

En mi experiencia la escalabilidad es como construir tu propia casa, si agregas una extensión que no estaba planificada... si se hace mal podría traer graves consecuencias. Aunque es bien cierto que la escalabilidad viene consigo muchas implementaciones que a futuro no se encontraban en el scope inicial, es importante no perder el enfoque de la solución.
