How can you create a community policing program that works?

I advocate community policing should be part of operational philosophy of the police organisation. People and even police leadership confuse between the concepts of community policing and community oriented policing. Community policing is forging partnership with community so that the community becomes co-sharer of public safety. Community oriented policing denotes a series of citizen-centric programmes where community and the police come closure. Therefore, community policing in my opinion is a much broader concept which makes the citizens’ partners in public safety measures and encourages citizens’ feedback to prioritise the policing on street level. To effectively implement community policing, a thorough needs assessment is crucial. This involves: Community Engagement: Utilize surveys, interviews, and focus groups to directly engage with community members, understanding their concerns and perceptions regarding safety and policing. Police Perspective: Gather input from police officers to understand their challenges, perspectives, and needs in engaging with the community effectively. Data Analysis: Examine crime statistics, patterns of disorder, and relevant social indicators like poverty levels, education, and healthcare access, to gain a comprehensive view of the community’s context.

Two key takeaways are to listen and to look at the data. Often times what people in the community want is not what you might think they want. Also look at the best available local data. A cornerstone of community policing is to have impact where people live. If there is a rise in one area of crime, give that focus. Stop a crime and you send other would-be criminals a strong message: Not in our backyard. Real data are important, not just what people think the data are. When it comes to crime, they can differ widely. People want to see results. So with the crimes that are most prevalent in that community. Then measure your success.

Assessing the needs should also include examining the underlying and historical factors that caused on contributed to the needs of the community. What policy decisions, economic development, zoning laws, infrastructure and investment have been made or withheld from the community of concern.

Community policing is relevant to the community that the police serve. Consideration will include the policing plan and the PCC's plan. Wen addressing the needs of the community police are asked to consider an evidenced based policing approach to dealing or reducing the issue. For community policing to work ,we must engaged the biggest stakeholders who are the communities ,this also includes strengthening coordination between the community policing and other security structures for the case of east African countries we have the district peace ✌️ committees ,nyumba kumi etc all this organs must be people lead and in harmony which goes along way in even informing the Early warning ,early response system the EWER . The community must fully understand the roles and contributions of community policing for it to work and encourage ownership ,they should also have a role the selection process ,but most importantly community policing should also understand that they are working for the people, #CommunityPolicing

I agree , while stakeholder engagement and collaborative goal-setting are commendable, the success of the plan hinges too on effective communication, addressing diverse needs, and navigating potential challenges with sensitivity.

Involving community voice is a must because it's about them. I would rather see policy representatives that have a more casual dress code and demeanor steering the ship verses someone that shouts wealth. Grassroots approach works best.

I actually agree with this because a project/solution to a problem that does not involve the people in the community will fail, involving them brings about continuity of the solution that will be provided

Using all of those methods are great, but I didn't read anything about using a trauma-centred model. Meeting people where they are in life is an important first step to creating a solid foundation where trust can begin to develop. Learning about and understanding the journey that has landed them where they are, is second in line, as that offers answers to what needs to be fixed in order to prevent future mistakes.
